Featuring Maryanne Sam and Peter Rotumah
A show - and story - of two worlds. Island princesses. Absent father. Black girls in white bedrooms singing into hairbrushes, dreaming of a place in the sun.
Oh My God I'm Black! recounts the powerful and charming story of a Torres Strait Islander woman's journey "down south to cold, miserable Melbourne". The story relates the birth of her two children, her death, the children's subsequent upbringing by their white grandmother, and their long road back to connect with their family, culture and community.
This performance is a showcase for one of our community's most talented actor-singers and celebrates, through music and storytelling, a biographical journey of self-awareness, identity and the strength of family.
Devised by Maryanne Sam, Patricia Cornelius and Irine Vela.
