The Lost Art of Theatre Etiquette – 3 April 2010
For first-timers, our simple list might help you feel more comfortable
- Arrive early: shows start on time and it’s better to be early and have time for a drink rather than be late and locked out of the theatre [as some shows have a time frame in which you can’t enter as it may disrupt both the performers on stage and the audience].
- Mobile phones and pagers must be turned off. Just like going to the movies, phones ringing or beeping severely inconvenience artists and patrons and interrupt the experience.
- Recording, flash photography and laser lights are not permitted in the auditorium. Shows are protected by copyright laws and taking unauthorised still photos, video and audio recordings is a violation of these laws. Camera flashes can be enough to seriously distract a performer which can cause major safety issues.
- Only bottled water is permitted inside the auditorium. However there are exceptions (especially during Adelaide Cabaret Festival) so check with ushers if you’re uncertain.
- Neat casual dress, including footwear is required at all times.
- Talking during a show can be a major distraction from what’s happening on stage so refrain from speaking to your friend/s until interval or the show’s over.
- Applause is what performers live off and is never unappreciated, so applaud whenever you feel like you should. If you're worried however, just wait until everybody else claps. There is specific applause etiquette for symphonies - most symphonies are made up of several 'movements', in between which the orchestra will wait for a few moments. It's customary not to applaud until the end of the final movement.
- Unexpected happenings on stage: Where possible marketing materials will communicate in advance any special conditions of a performance including age suitability, challenging themes, special effects, nudity or coarse language. Check your ticket or the website beforehand if you have any concerns.
- Lost property. If you have found or lost an item at Adelaide Festival Centre please contact Stage Door on 8216 8724.
