Artist Ibtihal Samarayi explores detention and freedom through a series of huge padlocks in Locked Inside. “My own work comes from my experiences as an Iraqi artist who lived in refugee camps in Iran and Turkey before gaining a permanent visa in Australia. The detainees’ experiences need to be communicated to the public and I feel a deep responsibility as an Iraqi refugee to support them.”
'Locked Inside' is a unique touring exhibition, the scale of which has a profound impact on its audiences and gives genuine insight into the plight of refugees in Australian detention centres.
This tour is supported by Kultour: touring Australian multicultural arts, changing Australian culture - a proud initiative of the Australia Council for the Arts.
Presented in collaboration with Nexus Multicultural Arts Centre.
