Debussy Prelude a 'L'apres-midi d'un faune' (Afternoon of a Faun)
Brett Dean Violin Concerto, The Lost Art of Letter Writing
Ravel Bolero
Debussy Iberia
Ravel La Valse
A perfect Gallic reverie with a touch of the erotic. Debussy's floating Prelude a L'apres - midi d'un faune, the intoxicating rhythm of Ravel's Bolero and La Valse and the sounds of Spain in Iberia will hypnotise audiences. A highlight of 2011, this concert features Brett Dean's Violin Concerto, subtitled The Lost Art of Letter Writing, a work which won the world's most prestigious composition prize, The Grawemeyer. This moving homage to the hand-written letter, dedicated to the work's champion, Frank Peter Zimmermann, is both a lament for the 'lost art' of domestic writing and a meditation on great letters penned by people as various as Brahms and Ned Kelly.
