There’s big – and then there’s Bernstein. From
West Side Story to
Candide, celebrated classical composer
Leonard Bernstein knew how to make a big song and dance.
Bernstein regarded
Mass, a kaleidoscopic mix of music, dance and theatre featuring a symphony orchestra, a rock band, a choir and opera singers as his defining achievement. Commissioned for the opening of the Kennedy Center in 1970,
Mass features a small village of performers and a supremely charismatic lead in the ‘Celebrant’, performed by the great US gospel singer
Jubilant Sykes.
The spectacle of
Mass is underpinned by a profound statement of human faith that is explosive, cathartic and ultimately uplifting.
