The Tales of Hoffmann (Les Contes D'Hoffmann)
4, 7, 9, 11 July 2009, 7.30pm

Hoffmann has never been lucky in love. He's infatuated by the mechanical performing doll Olympia, seduced by the bejeweled courtesan Giulietta, obsessed by the consumptive Antonia and when he meets Stella, she holds the promise of all three women rolled into one. Is Hoffmann a victim of his own imagination or a helpless pawn in love's cruel hands?

Offenbach's sumptuous score is packed with many of his most memorable arias and duets including Olympia's dazzling doll song, the world famous barcarolle in the Venetian scene and Dapertutto's beautiful diamond aria.

Stuart Maunder's highly acclaimed production created in 2007 for Opera Australia comes to Adelaide for the first time with a stellar cast.

Conductor: Benjamin Northey
with Adelaide Symphony Orchestra and State Opera Chorus.

This production is presented by arrangement with Opera Australia.

Sung in French with English Surtitles.
