By David Harrower.
A LITTLE KNOWLEDGE IS A DANGEROUS THING.
Winner 1998 Theater Heute German Critics Award - Best Play
David Harrower's stunning first play is a haunting meditation on how we define our world.
Set in a pre-industrial God-fearing rural village, the play follows a young woman, recently married to the ploughman 'Pony' William, as she discovers the limits of the language she has been given. When she meets the despised village miller, her world begins to shift as he introduces her to the written word and a world outside of blind faith. The pen is indeed mightier than the sword...
Knives in Hens deals passionately and intelligently with a woman's discovery of a language that corresponds to her feelings. The play creates a haunting, poetic and entirely individual world of its own, one that speaks to the inexpressible yearnings within all of us.
"I have never seen a play quite like it."Daily Telegraph
"A remarkable theatrical debut. Knives in Hens is a play you feel. Articulation comes later and is never adequate."The Guardian
