Retratos: Portraits of Brasil

From choro to tango and beyond, journey through the multi-layered heritage of Brazilian street music.

Master guitarist Doug de Vries, Brazilian virtuoso Yamandú Costa and Caliente Trio explore the rich guitar legacy of South America in a dazzling showcase.

Origintating in the streets and salons of Rio de Janeiro, choro has roots in Africa and the Iberian Peninsula which melded with indigenous traditions through waves of migration and the slave trade. This collision of three worlds has become the basis for the charismatic and colourful music of Brazil.

Hold onto your hats for an absorbing performance, brimming with dextrous energy, wistful melancholy, spontaneity and humour as these exceptional musicians pay tribute to some of Brazil's finest composers.
