A Ladykillers Production presented by Vitalstatistix in association with Adelaide Festival Centre's inSPACE program. From the team who created the award-winning treat Cake. A story about identity and loss and the slippery nature of truth The Pyjama Girl is inspired by the true Australian story of a murdered woman whose body, clad in yellow silk pyjamas was found in Albury, NSW in 1934. Known only as the Pyjama Girl she would not be identified for a decade. The mystery captivated the Australian public and has become a modern myth. We know nothing of who the Pyjama Girl really was or how she lived, and somehow because of this she lives on in our culture. Despite the existence of factual information - there are countless versions of events, some bordering on the bizarre. Ladykillers reveal the essence of this story about identity and loss and the slippery nature of truth. Alfred Hitchcock and film noir influenced, The Pyjama Girl is moving, at times disturbing and blackly funny. "Evocative, engaging, curious and compelling. Ladykillers make memorable theatre of extraordinary quality." This work is suitable for patrons aged 14 years and above.

Adelaide Festival Centre's trans:mission program in association with Cartell Music presents So Frenchy So Chic - L!VE The So Frenchy So Chic albums have captivated the fans and sold over 90,000 copiesand introduced artists such as Camille, Emilie Simon and Nouvelle Vague. Now for the first time in Adelaide the So Frenchy So Chic Live series will present of a memorable double bill featuring two of the most acclaimed stars of the French new wave: whimsical folk-pop duo Cocoon and five-piece indie-bluegrass outfit Moriarty. Cocoon describe themselves (and perhaps with tongues-in-cheek) as a folk-pop version of The White Stripes. Cocoon’s close harmonic, heartfelt and charming sound echoes the refrains of singer-songwriters Nick Drake and Elliot Smith, with a nod to the ‘new folk’ melodies of Sufjan Stevens and Devendra Banhart. Cocoon has truly emerged in France with gold album sales and frequent airplay, and their penchant for deliciously black nursery rhymes set against a whimsical musical backdrop is recognised by fans around the world. Australian audiences are sure to love their unique covers, including Outcast’s Hey Ya and their surprisingly delicate and enchanting take on the disco classic Kung Fu Fighting. “a beautiful urban fairytale in which two adults are transformed into folk stars at the strike of a banjo chord.” Guitare Bass [France] Cocoon MySpace Moriarty takes its cue from the worlds of 1930s American folk and European cabaret. This stripped-back ensemble comprises four men on various acoustic instruments fronted by haunting vocals of the enigmatic Rosemary. Singing in English with a style that’s been variously described as early Neil Young, folk, country, blues, jazz and even Americana, each song tells a story, occasionally true, often false, but always intense. Following a string of acclaimed gigs across Europe and the US, the one absolute of this mysterious group is that their sound is irresistible. “Unique, unmissable Moriarty are featuring the finest talent on the alt psycfolk scene.” Evening Standard Moriarty MySpace FREE entertainment and drink specials in the FEZ BAR – after the show [Located in the Piano Bar in the Festival Theatre foyer] Pre-show dinner deal in the Bistro $ 45 per person Includes a shared platter of tasters for entrée, main course & a glass of house wine.
Presented by Andrew McKinnon and Spiritworks Cat Stevens. The name brings back a thousand memories - dark eyes, a winning voice and songs which the whole world sang along to. Back in the 70s Cat Stevens was the ultimate rock star. Talented, charismatic, with a seemingly endless succession of beautiful melodies streaming from his imagination, the one-time teen idol turned international singing star had everything. He sold more than 60 million albums, earned enough money to last several lifetimes, and enjoyed all the trappings of fame. But he wanted more out of life. So at the height of his career he shocked the world by taking his last bow. The music stopped and Cat Stevens was no more. Whatever became of the man who wrote Father and Son, Moon Shadow and Where do the Children Play? Why did he turn his back on the world? PEACE TRAIN is a night of music and story-telling which will strike a chord deep inside the heart of anyone who longs for something more; A journey back in time, recreating the sights and sounds, seeking out the man in the music and telling the story behind the songs. Then, of course, there is the music. Hear twenty-three hits sung with remarkable authenticity by one of Australia's most exciting young artists Darren Coggan, backed by a high-energy band. From First Cut is the Deepest, to Remember The Days Of The Old School, Lady D'Arbanville, Sad Lisa and Peace Train, Darren Coggan traces the path of a man who never stopped wondering about how to make the world a better place. PEACE TRAIN - The Cat Stevens Story - has had audiences on their feet, cheering for more at every stop. "Darren Coggan seamlessly weaves the Cat Stevens Story in song and speech in what ends with a standing ovation."Sunday Herald Sun Suitable for all ages.

Presented by Michael Coppel RY COODER & NICK LOWE with JOACHIM COODER and special guest Juliette Commagere. RY COODER & NICK LOWE return to Australia for an evening of remarkable performances showcasing their celebrated careers and repertoires. Touring Australia for the first time in nearly 30 years the master slide guitarist will share the stage with his longtime friend and musical brother-in-arms, as well as his son, Joachim Cooder on drums, and vocalist Juliette Commagere. Lowe is credited with convincing Cooder to head out on tour, the seed planted earlier this year whilst performing at a benefit show in San Francisco. From there a short run of European shows has grown into a (to date) 24 show tour that has now been extended to include a limited number of select Australian dates. If the two stars had been in any doubt of their reception before the show then the standing ovations & the two demands for encores which followed would have made it clear that Edinburgh loved them. - The Scotsman Throughout his extensive career Cooder has enjoyed a wide ranging solo career, as well as playing and recording with such luminaries as Captain Beefheart, The Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, Taj Mahal & Randy Newman. Last year saw the release of I,Flathead, the final part of his acclaimed Californian trilogy, inclusive of Chavez Ravine & My Name Is Buddy. However to some Cooder is best known for his championing of everything from Hawaiian slack key guitar to Tex-Mes/Norteno, as well as for the world wide success of the Buena Vista Social Club, to his numerous film scores particularly Wim Wenders' Paris, Texas. Rolling Stone lists Cooder as one of the ten best guitarists of all time, rightly placing him amongst an elite group whose guitar style is instantly identifiable by a single note, in Cooder's case, a haunting, heart-rendering slide tone. Cooder arrived on stage to a hero's welcome & proceeded to mesmerize with a stunning performance. - Hot Press Cooder's guitar solos couldn't have been sweeter or more heartbreaking. - The Herald (UK) Cooder & Lowe's working relationship was established in the late '80s in the quartet Little Village. Lowe's career began a decade earlier with band Brinsley Schwarz, & later markedly influencing punk rock as producer for Stiff Records recording acts such as The Damned, Elvis Costello & The Pretenders. However, his own musical styling graduated through new wave, roots rock, country rhythm, blues & rock 'n' roll - most notable hit singles include Cruel To Be Kind & (What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love & Understanding. The evening was a mixture of the old, the new, the borrowed & the definitely blue. Lowe's silky voice & sharply observed lyrics... & Cooder showed why he's considered the best slide player in the world... - The Scotsman ...a set that stirred the memory, surprised with its exuberant rendering of some of the old material & confirmed Cooder's status as the king of slide guitar. - The Herald (UK) Performing the opening set and joining Cooder & Lowe on stage is special guest JULIETTE COMMAGERE. The charismatic lead of indie-rock band Hello Stranger has stepped out on her own releasing solo debut album Queens Die Proudly. A show not to be missed!

Aurelia Carbone - A toy boat on the Serpentine The unifying idea behind Aurelia Carbone's body of work is the visual representation of what she likes to think of as "common human experiences" - those personal, clear and almost endless moments that change and enhance our understanding of the world and our place in it. The works are infused with optimistic outcomes of personal (and yet universal) crisis; including pregnancy, travel through unfamiliar territories and leaps of faith.

Presented by Adelaide Festival Set in the lush minimalism of an illuminated white void, a young woman is utterly victimised. Two actresses in gold leotards frolic across the stage and, with immense pleasure, abandon themselves to the humiliation of a third woman. A situation of merciless cruelty emerges, from which a fragile and moving beauty astonishingly wells up. Driven by an ensemble of artists with intellectual disabilities, Back to Back is uniquely placed to comment on the social, cultural, ethical and value-based structures that define the institution known as 'the majority'. Accompanied by a trance-like live improvisation by Sydney cult jazz trio, The Necks, Food Court is visually and musically virtuosic, and at the same time takes us back to the essence of theatre. A near death experience in a suburban wonderland, Food Court will shock, challenge and confront. Be not afraid. And just as Gershwin's universally recognised music married classical orchestrations with daring jazz rhythms to create new directions in sound, the Compagnie Montalvo-Hervieu leads the way in its unique collaboration of choreography and new media. Little wonder it is now universally regarded as one of Europe's most exciting contemporary dance companies and a leader in the integration of live performance with video technology. The brainchild of director, José Montalvo, and his co-choreographer, Dominique Hervieu, Good Morning Mr Gershwin melds contemporary dance, hip-hop, slamming and tap dancing with live singing and percussion set in a fantasy world provided by a stunning backdrop of big-screen make-believe. Live dancers interact with their video counterparts in a witty production inspired by the effervescence of Gershwin and the absurdity of the 1930s Broadway musical and Hollywood film oeuvre. This is an irrepressible musical dance show that will have you helplessly tapping your feet as you're rocked back and forth between the twenties and today, swapping genres and cultures. Allons-y!
Presented by Adelaide Festival Seize the day. Never was there such a mind-boggling work to convey that lifeaffirming message with such force and grotesque inspiration. 'The Big Mac' - as it's ironically nicknamed - is considered a milestone in the history of opera, the only one written by György Ligeti. Sung in English by a stellar international cast, this ground breaking anti-anti opera, written by Ligeti in 1978, has never before been seen in Australia. This savage burlesque comes to us directly from the English National Opera with a breathtakingly clever and audacious new staging by La Fura dels Baus - the company that famously created the Barcelona Olympics opening ceremony and is also remembered for their controversial production at the 1996 Adelaide Festival. With outrageous wit, wildly virtuosic vocal writing and astonishing filmic effects, Le Grand Macabre is a spectacular surrealist farce set in a fantasy world that laughs in the face of modern life and points to the moral: eat, drink and make love, for who knows when the world might end. Gross, enthralling, outrageous, funny and essentially human, don't miss an exclusive opportunity to see this huge new production in Australia. Sung in English with surtitles WARNING:Adult concepts - may not be suitable for children under 15 years.
Presented by Adelaide Festival NGURRUMILMARRMIRIYU. (translation - Wrong Skin) Elcho Island off the North-East coast of Arnhem Land may be one of the world's remotest places. But this has not stopped this small community taking the world by storm. Recently Yolngu artist Gurrumul Yunupingu turned first his guitar, and then the musical world upside down, with his dreamlike Yolngu ballads. Then Elcho's unique 'Chooky Dancers', via a three minute clip on YouTube, managed to reach one and a half million people with their hilarious rendition of Zorba the Greek Yolngu Style, fusing Aboriginal dance, hip hop and comedy. Born on the broken asphalt of the Galiwinku Saturday night disco, the world roared its approval. Now Elcho Island and The Chooky Dancers join hands with multi-award winning director Nigel Jamieson (Sydney Olympic Opening Ceremony, Red Square). Together they fuse traditional culture, dance, film and comedy with influences drawn from mobile phone technology to the unforgettable Saturday night discos, Taiwanese martial art videos and Bollywood. A Romeo and Juliet like story of forbidden love, skin and clan the work explores with abandoned energy the pressures faced by remote Indigenous communities, determined to maintain their identity and culture, while finding a place for their children in the contemporary world. This promises to be an important and joyous moment in Australian theatre. In memory of Frank.
Presented by Australian Dance Theatre in association with Adelaide Festival Centre's Pivot(al) Program and Adelaide Festival What makes you "you"? Garry Stewart's world premiere season of Be Your Self reveals the precarious stability of the concept of self as the work steps through the conventions we use to convince ourselves of a singular 'I'. In this extraordinary new creation Stewart situates the body at the centre of his inquiry. Despite our civilising cultural inscriptions the body is a force to be reckoned with. In Be Your Self the ADT dancers are transformed into erupting, powerful, creative entities projecting a mountain of startling physical images and impressions set to a wildly unpredictable, cartoonish, electronic score. Collaborating with visionary New York architectural firm Diller, Scofidio + Renfro - (MacArthur Foundation 'Genius Award' recipients), Stewart wields dance, spoken text, video graphics and architectural design to collapse the underpinnings of who we think we are. Be Your Self promises to be a formidable new contribution to Australian contemporary dance. Garry Stewart's intelligent infusion of art forms and audacious choreographic approach has taken Australian Dance Theatre to the forefront of international contemporary dance. WARNINGS: Strobe effect lighting is used during this performance. Be Your Self is made for an Adult audience. Suitable for School Year 10 patrons and above.
Presented by Adelaide Festival What is beauty? In China, nakedness is considered superficial and unattractive, while sex is a subject of embarrassment and absolute taboo in public. Between east and west still lies a cultural chasm that is beyond politics, race and rhetoric. Bridging the gap is Shanghai Beauty, a creation commissioned by the House of the World Cultures, Berlin and developed as a collaboration between China's first independent dance ensemble, Jin Xing Dance Theatre Shanghai, and the German dance company Rubato. In Shanghai Beauty, the two opposing views of the body and the beautiful are examined through a cross-cultural choreography for 16 dancers who move as one. It is the clothed body that inspires the fantasy of the dance. After all, isn't it what's covered, concealed and hidden from view that creates the mystical and the alluring? Who better to explore these concepts than the star of the show and choreographer, Jin Xing: a former colonel in the People's Liberation Army who was propelled to notoriety and stardom after undergoing a sex-change 15 years ago. Now happily married with adopted children, acknowledged as China's most famous and successful choreographer and its leading force in contemporary dance, Jin Xing has surrounded herself with the cream of her nation's talent, drawn together from its different regions and ethnic minorities. Sumptuously staged to a score which blends Beijing Opera, German Electronica and Glenn Gould's immortal rendering of JS Bach's 48 Preludes and Fugues, Shanghai Beauty provides an intriguing blend of Western influences and traditional Chinese artistry.
Presented by Adelaide Festival "Read this. It's a real son of a bitch." With those words, William Faulkner summed up his masterwork, The Sound and the Fury, to a friend. Today it is often considered one of the 100 greatest books of all time. And it's still a "real son of a bitch" to embrace. This was the book that paved the way for modern literature, developing the stream-of-consciousness style pioneered by James Joyce and Virginia Woolf. Only the most daring and assured theatre company would attempt to bring such a work to the stage. Not surprisingly, that company is Elevator Repair Service. Over the last 20 years, this hot property from New York City has developed a cult following for its wild and edgy literary adventures. With The Sound and the Fury, Elevator Repair Service has taken on the most challenging chapter of this demanding work, April 7, 1928 (otherwise known as Benjy's Chapter), to achieve a work that played to sold-out houses in an extended run in New York. Set in an eerily - and appropriately - timeless living room, the veneer of this Southern family is scraped bare to reveal a troubled past told through the eyes and addled memories of their mute and mentally retarded son, Benjy. Accordingly, past and present shift, characters transmogrify and worlds collide with effortless fluidity as the ensemble romps through this dark story with bursts of high-energy humour and pathos. Almost impossibly, what they do through their vivid ingenuity is illuminate the clarity within the chaos and turn absurdity into reality.
Presented by Adelaide Festival It's 11 o'clock in the morning in a council flat on the Walworth Road in London. In two hours time, as is normal, three Irish men will have consumed six cans of Harp, fifteen crackers with spreadable cheese, ten pink biscuit wafers and one oven cooked chicken with a strange blue sauce. In two hours time, as is normal, five people will have been killed. As dark as a glass of Guinness and every bit as likely to compel discussion, this enthralling play-within-a-play from Druid rides the cutting-edge of Ireland's new wave. After its premiere in Galway in 2006, The Walworth Farce played the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2007 where it became both a critical and box-office hit, taking out the prestigious Fringe First Award in the process. Every family has stories. But what happens when the lore is a lie? Can you change the script of history and re-run it for the ending you desire? This mesmerising production plays as high-energy, madcap slapstick interlaced with gut-wrenching realism and achingly tender insights. As the Irish father, Dinny, foresees it, it's "a day of twists and turns and ducks and dives and terrible shocks". Bring your intelligence, suspend your disbelief, and The Walworth Farce will repay you with a theatrical experience that will gnaw at your imagination for days afterward.
Adelaide Festival 2010 - Wayne Shorter Quartet

Presented by Adelaide Festival "To hell with the rules." At 76, after half a century attaining the status of living legend and securing a throne in the Jazz Hall of Fame, Wayne Shorter says: "A lot of musicians worry about protecting what I call their musical foundation. I've got nothing to lose. I'm going for the unknown." We probably need say no more to his legion of fans (including one awestruck Paul Grabowsky). The prospect of seeing this musical giant in person, and in such a feisty mood, should fulfil your lifetime's ambition. To those who came late, however, Wayne Shorter was born in Newark, New Jersey and took up the clarinet in his teens, before switching to both the tenor and soprano sax: instruments that earmarked him for greatness with his sensitive choice of notes, economy and unparalleled expression. Attracting the attention of Miles Davis, he joined his quintet in 1964, contributing such landmark compositions as Nefertiti, ESP, Pinocchio, Sanctuary, Fall and Footprints. In 1970, he co-founded Weather Report, the fusion supergroup that produced 16 acclaimed recordings, including 1980s Grammy Award-winning doublelive set, 8:30. In 2001 Wayne joined up with three celebrated and hugely talented musicians with whom he found an uncanny chemistry, forming the quartet we'll witness here: pianist, Danilo Perez; bassist, John Patitucci; and drummer, Brian Blade. This is the same line-up that produced the ambitious Allegria with a large ensemble earning him another Grammy. If you're into jazz, you'll be here. But if you're even vaguely curious, don't miss this chance to mix with a master. To make a Carbon Credit Donation and help manage the Adelaide Festival's carbon footprint, click here

Dainty Consolidated Entertainment is thrilled to confirm that Patrizio Buanne, the world's most exciting baritone crooner, will tour Australia in May 2010. The concert tour will travel to Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide, Brisbane and Perth. Inspired by the legendary Italian American singers of the 50's and 60's, like Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra, Patrizio Buanne epitomises style, sophistication and elegance. With his rich baritone voice he is a unique performer in the modern world of entertainment. Patrizio is renowned for his energetic yet intimate live shows, he uniquely combines charisma, sex appeal and raw talent with a natural intuition for performance. This will be Patrizio's 3rd national concert tour of Australia, he last toured in 2007 to sold-out crowds. With over a million album sales already to his credit, Patrizio enters an exciting new stage of his career with the release of his eponymously titled third album. The new collection follows his previous albums 'The Italian' (2005) and 'Forever Begins Tonight' (2007). Produced by Humberto Gatica (Celine Dion, Andrea Bocelli and Michael Bubl?) and recorded at Westlake and Capitol Studios in Los Angeles, the album both pays homage to Patrizio's influences while also offering enthralling original compositions. It highlights contemporary interpretations of classics from the great Italian and American songbooks including 'Mambo Italiano', 'Fly Me To The Moon', 'Have you Ever Really Loved a Woman' and 'Never, Never, Never' alongside new songs such as Diane Warren's 'Why Did You Have To Be?'. Patrizio recorded his debut album 'The Italian' at Abbey Road alongside the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and it proved to be a truly global phenomenon with sales reaching double Platinum in Australia and Platinum in South Africa, New Zealand, Asia, Austria and Finland. In the UK, 'The Italian' was certified double Gold with sales in excess of 200,000 as it hit the Top 10 of the album charts. His second album 'Forever Begins Tonight' continued his success as it crashed into the Top 10 on Billboard's Top World Music Albums chart. Again featuring the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the album was particularly notable for featuring the first and only Italian language interpretation of Robbie Williams' signature song 'Angels'. Patrizio's popularity spread to the live arena as he embarked on several sold-out international tours. Key to his success is his inimitable voice and charmingly charismatic live performances.
An Australian premiere from Graeme Murphy Choreographic legend Graeme Murphy returns to The Australian Ballet stage in 2010 with a dazzling full-length work. Based loosely on The Rose Cavalier, The Silver Rose is a ballet of romantic intrigue and love gone wrong. The Marschallin, a celebrated actress, is still very beautiful but fears her lover might fall for a younger woman. Inevitably he does. Against spectacular Art Nouveau sets, the cast tie each other in romantic knots. It seems in turn-of-last-century Vienna, love is a dangerous game. With music by Australian composer Carl Vine, The Silver Rose is set to be Murphy's sell-out success of 2010.

When her brother Ed reveals that he too has designs on the lad, Sloane is wily enough to play the siblings off against each other. Only the suspicions of their father, Kemp, threaten this very cosy situation, but maybe even that can be sorted. Subversively slipping this Oedipal sex-farce past the ever-watchful eye of the censor in 1964, Joe Orton raised innuendo to new and thrilling heights. Featuring Yasmina Reza's incisive observations, acerbic wit and deliciously shrewd humour, God of Carnage is a hysterically funny night of name-calling, tantrums and tears before bedtime. This production contains coarse language.

THE PRICE by Arthur Miller. Director: Adam Cook Designer: Ailsa Paterson Lighting Designer: Mark Pennington Cast includes: Michael Habib, Carmel Johnson, Dennis Olsen In the attic of a soon-to-be-demolished house, two brothers meet after a 16-year estrangement to dispose of their deceased parents' property. Victor is a policeman who sacrificed his education and a probable career as a scientist to care for his ruined, invalid father. His brother, Walter, is a wealthy surgeon who turned his back on family responsibilities to concentrate on medicine and personal success. In an attempt to make amends, Walter helps Victor to try and get the best possible deal for their father's possessions. Haggling over the price of furniture exposes a story of missed opportunities and seething resentments, raising the price of decisions both brothers have made in their lives. Fraught, but cut through with humour, The Price is one of Arthur Miller's finest plays

THE GIVE AND TAKE by Tony McNamara. Director: Catherine Fitzgerald Designer: Mary Moore Composer: Ian Moorhead Cast includes: Chris Asimos, Rhiannon Owen Ever had a sneaking suspicion that Australian society is built on corruption, greed and self-serving narcissism? Then Tony McNamara's your man. But his latest play turns this misanthropic misgiving into a wisecracking, side-splitting, laugh-a-minute sitcom. From the first moment to the last, The Give and Take unabashedly goes for the laugh and gets it. There are, if you need that sort of thing, take-home messages about the emptiness of materialism and the corruption of family life, but basically this is a broad, smart-alecky satire about parenting, the younger generation and love that is strictly conditional and convertible to cash. Don is an executive. His mind should be on his firm's latest line of garden sprinklers. But his wife just told him she's leaving to have tantric sex in Tuscany. When he tells his three children, they aren't surprised: they're a self-absorbed trio only interested in Dad's money. Neil is a leftist layabout. Julie is a corporate cowgirl. And Damien is a steroid-stuffed gym-bunny. There's no reason why their cushy lifestyles shouldn't continue into the foreseeable future as long as Don doesn't do anything crazy...

Presented by Windmill in association with Adelaide Festival Centre's inSPACE Program ROBIN HOOD RETOLD It's a world where all bets are off. Corruption, sleaze and violence pervade. When a young boy is brutally attacked, one guy and his crew take the law into their own hands seeking retribution and a new world order in the depths of a dark forest. Young, sexy and invincible, the group lives large. But violence comes at a cost and Robin has secrets. Cracks appear and the friends face off. As they fight to keep it together, the enemy closes in and their world starts to implode. In the unique theatrical voice of Australia's Matthew Whittet, Fugitive is an anarchic, hysterical, knife-edge ride with a direct line out of the psyche of a contemporary anti-hero. By the director and designer team that created Windmill's The Wizard of Oz, Fugitive considers just how far a group of people will go for their ideals and the quest for justice? When does bad behaviour cross the line? And when do the oppressed become the perpetrators? Champion of the underdog, a fleeing desperado, a modern-day man in tights. Writer: Matthew Whittet Director: Rosemary Myers Designer: Jonathon Oxlade Starring: Patrick Graham, Geoff Revell, and Matthew Whittet Warning: Features language which may be considered offensive and depictions of violence

Australian Dance Theatre in association with Adelaide Festival Centre's inSPACE program presents IGNITION Can any human movement be dance? Do we have to move to dance? Is talking dancing? Is there dance in stillness? What is dance technique? Can anyone dance? With a list of seemingly subversive questions, Australian Dance Theatre’s Artistic Director Garry Stewart provides a forum for a group of emerging choreographers to disrupt expectations of what we think dance, theatre, movement, ability and talent are and remind us that art comes from heretical investigation. ADT dancers and independent choreographers/directors present new short works that bring in to sharp focus the bisection between ‘dance’ and ‘not dance’. The Ignition program features the formidable and diverse talents of the ensemble of Australian Dance Theatre. Garry Stewart introduced Ignition as an annual choreographic season in 2000. Ignition provides Australian Dance Theatre dancers and young independent choreographers with the opportunity to develop their nascent skills in dance making as well as firing their imaginations through a creative process. Ignition has been an important springboard for many of Australia’s most promising choreographers with previous seasons showcasing early works by Tanja Liedtke, Antony Hamilton, Lina Limonsani and Larissa McGowan. “...do yourself a favour and book a ticket...
Restless Dance Theatre in association with Adelaide Festival Centre's inSPACE program presents BEAUTY World Premiere Featuring five female dancers, Beauty investigates the notion of beauty and will explore Sir Francis Bacon’s famous idea that there is ‘no excellent beauty that hath not some strangeness in the proportion’. The dancers create images that are stunning yet strange, in response to classic images of women from visual art, taking a detailed and sculptural approach to the body. Exploring the notion of being or becoming an object of desire, the fleeting nature of youth, beauty and movement itself, the idea of being overcome by ‘unbearable’ beauty, and the despair, distance, terror and jealousy that beauty can evoke. Beauty also plays with the idea that in order to recognise beauty we must also see its opposite, with a constant hint of the sinister. The work delves into the nature of female friendships, playing with intimacy, independence, imitation, competition, envy, rejection and bitchiness. Beauty is proudly sumptuously and subversively feminine, and visually captivating with moments of exquisite power.
Adelaide Festival Centre's Adelaide Cabaret Festival Presents BREL Enjoy a night of French Cabaret with JOHN WATERS. One of Australia’s most recognised and respected actors and singers, John Waters will perform a concert that highlights the songs of the great French Chanson singer-songwriter Jacques Brel. While many of Brel’s songs were recorded in English translation in the ‘60s and ‘70s by artists including Frank Sinatra, Neil Diamond, Dusty Springfield, and Ray Charles, Waters will perform them as the original French versions, explaining their significance along the way - sometimes comic, sometimes tragic, sometimes painfully romantic but always engrossing and compelling. Waters has been inspired by Brel’s songbook since he was in his teens, leading him to perform these incredible songs in late night shows in Sydney’s Kings Cross in the early 1970s. This eventually evolved into the critically acclaimed tribute show Cafe Brel in 1999. Now in this brand new incarnation, simply titled BREL, Waters will create and assume the character again, telling stories rich in dimensions that will arouse and entice you into the world and music of Jacques Brel. If you saw Waters’ popular John Lennon tribute Looking through a Glass Onion and loved it, then BREL is sure to cast a spell and get under your skin. “Waters makes the French connection.” Sydney Morning Herald Suitable 16+ years.
Adelaide Festival Centre's trans:mission program in association with Bluesfest presents BELA FLECK'S AFRICAN PROJECT featuring Oumou Sangare and band A finger-pickin' night of African banjo-beats. Described as the premiere banjo player in the world multi Grammy Award winner Béla Fleck and his renowned ensemble the Flecktones have taken the banjo across the global musical map through collaborations with musical legends as diverse as Chick Corea, Sting, Bobby McFerrin, Bonnie Rait and even the Grateful Dead. Oumou Sangaré is described as one of Mali’s greatest female voices. She sings about love and the importance of freedom backed up by her trademark funk-driven Wassoulou sound. Sangaré has toured with Baaba Maal, Femi Kuti and more recently has duetted with stars such as Alicia Keys, Me’Shell Ndégéocello, and Pink Floyd guitarist Dave Gilmour. Béla Fleck will join Oumou Sangare’s 12 piece Malian band on stage for a finger-pickin’ night of African banjo-beats.
Adelaide Festival Centre's Australian Stories program presents a Steady Lads and Christine Dunstan production CODGERS by Don Reid Everyone either knows one, is related to one, lives with one - or is one! Eavesdrop on six senior Aussie men, some of them mates since war service, as they sweat it out together each week in a gym and are taken on inter-connected journeys that are challenging, touching and very funny. When secrets, differences and loss of trust threaten to destroy the long established friendships, they learn that ‘difference’ is more a matter of point of view; that ‘you wouldn’t be dead for quids’ and, no matter what, that you gotta laugh! Women see their husbands, adult children see their fathers, grandchildren see Grandad and the senior Australian male sees himself: whether he’s a WWII veteran, full of jokes and denial; a spry young lad of 60; scared and starting to lose it at 70; or Asian and still on the outer at 80. A comedy about ageing, friendship and being a codger. “This play has heart... the wit and warmth of the script, the ability of the characters to laugh at themselves.” Daily Telegraph With Ronald Falk, Ron Haddrick, Edwin Hodgeman, Jon Lam, Russell Newman and Shane Porteous Director Wayne Harrison Set & Costume Designer Nicholas Dare Lighting Designer Nicholas Higgins Winner of the prestigious Rodney Seaborn Playwright’s Award 2006 PLEASE NOTE: The Adelaide Festival Centre’s 2010 Season has been launched. A priority booking period applies for Season Pass purchasers until 17 December. (A Season Pass consists of discounted tickets if booking 4 or more selected shows across Season 2010). From 17 December, tickets to single shows will be available for purchase.
