Presented by Adelaide Festival NGURRUMILMARRMIRIYU. (translation - Wrong Skin) Elcho Island off the North-East coast of Arnhem Land may be one of the world's remotest places. But this has not stopped this small community taking the world by storm. Recently Yolngu artist Gurrumul Yunupingu turned first his guitar, and then the musical world upside down, with his dreamlike Yolngu ballads. Then Elcho's unique 'Chooky Dancers', via a three minute clip on YouTube, managed to reach one and a half million people with their hilarious rendition of Zorba the Greek Yolngu Style, fusing Aboriginal dance, hip hop and comedy. Born on the broken asphalt of the Galiwinku Saturday night disco, the world roared its approval. Now Elcho Island and The Chooky Dancers join hands with multi-award winning director Nigel Jamieson (Sydney Olympic Opening Ceremony, Red Square). Together they fuse traditional culture, dance, film and comedy with influences drawn from mobile phone technology to the unforgettable Saturday night discos, Taiwanese martial art videos and Bollywood. A Romeo and Juliet like story of forbidden love, skin and clan the work explores with abandoned energy the pressures faced by remote Indigenous communities, determined to maintain their identity and culture, while finding a place for their children in the contemporary world. This promises to be an important and joyous moment in Australian theatre. In memory of Frank.
Presented by Adelaide Festival "Read this. It's a real son of a bitch." With those words, William Faulkner summed up his masterwork, The Sound and the Fury, to a friend. Today it is often considered one of the 100 greatest books of all time. And it's still a "real son of a bitch" to embrace. This was the book that paved the way for modern literature, developing the stream-of-consciousness style pioneered by James Joyce and Virginia Woolf. Only the most daring and assured theatre company would attempt to bring such a work to the stage. Not surprisingly, that company is Elevator Repair Service. Over the last 20 years, this hot property from New York City has developed a cult following for its wild and edgy literary adventures. With The Sound and the Fury, Elevator Repair Service has taken on the most challenging chapter of this demanding work, April 7, 1928 (otherwise known as Benjy's Chapter), to achieve a work that played to sold-out houses in an extended run in New York. Set in an eerily - and appropriately - timeless living room, the veneer of this Southern family is scraped bare to reveal a troubled past told through the eyes and addled memories of their mute and mentally retarded son, Benjy. Accordingly, past and present shift, characters transmogrify and worlds collide with effortless fluidity as the ensemble romps through this dark story with bursts of high-energy humour and pathos. Almost impossibly, what they do through their vivid ingenuity is illuminate the clarity within the chaos and turn absurdity into reality. The new collection follows his previous albums 'The Italian' (2005) and 'Forever Begins Tonight' (2007). It highlights contemporary interpretations of classics from the great Italian and American songbooks including 'Mambo Italiano', 'Fly Me To The Moon', 'Have you Ever Really Loved a Woman' and 'Never, Never, Never' alongside new songs such as Diane Warren's 'Why Did You Have To Be?'. Patrizio recorded his debut album 'The Italian' at Abbey Road alongside the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and it proved to be a truly global phenomenon with sales reaching double Platinum in Australia and Platinum in South Africa, New Zealand, Asia, Austria and Finland. In the UK, 'The Italian' was certified double Gold with sales in excess of 200,000 as it hit the Top 10 of the album charts. His second album 'Forever Begins Tonight' continued his success as it crashed into the Top 10 on Billboard's Top World Music Albums chart. Again featuring the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the album was particularly notable for featuring the first and only Italian language interpretation of Robbie Williams' signature song 'Angels'. Patrizio's popularity spread to the live arena as he embarked on several sold-out international tours. Key to his success is his inimitable voice and charmingly charismatic live performances. The Marschallin, a celebrated actress, is still very beautiful but fears her lover might fall for a younger woman. Inevitably he does. Against spectacular Art Nouveau sets, the cast tie each other in romantic knots. It seems in turn-of-last-century Vienna, love is a dangerous game.
Presented by State Theate Company of South Australia ENTERTAINING MR SLOANE by Joe Orton. Director: Adam Cook Designer: Victoria Lamb Lighting Designer: Gavan Swift Cast includes: Renato Fabretti, Sean Taylor, Jacki Weaver Meeting Mr. Sloane in the local library, lonely middle-aged Kath decides he would be the perfect lodger for the spare room. True, he doesn't have much money, but she's sure they can come to some mutually beneficial arrangement. When her brother Ed reveals that he too has designs on the lad, Sloane is wily enough to play the siblings off against each other. Only the suspicions of their father, Kemp, threaten this very cosy situation, but maybe even that can be sorted. Subversively slipping this Oedipal sex-farce past the ever-watchful eye of the censor in 1964, Joe Orton raised innuendo to new and thrilling heights. Written on the cusp of the sexual revolution, Entertaining Mr Sloane is a gloriously witty romp full of sly sexiness and racy naughtiness.

THE PRICE by Arthur Miller. Director: Adam Cook Designer: Ailsa Paterson Lighting Designer: Mark Pennington Cast includes: Michael Habib, Carmel Johnson, Dennis Olsen In the attic of a soon-to-be-demolished house, two brothers meet after a 16-year estrangement to dispose of their deceased parents' property. Victor is a policeman who sacrificed his education and a probable career as a scientist to care for his ruined, invalid father. His brother, Walter, is a wealthy surgeon who turned his back on family responsibilities to concentrate on medicine and personal success. In an attempt to make amends, Walter helps Victor to try and get the best possible deal for their father's possessions. Haggling over the price of furniture exposes a story of missed opportunities and seething resentments, raising the price of decisions both brothers have made in their lives. Fraught, but cut through with humour, The Price is one of Arthur Miller's finest plays

THE GIVE AND TAKE by Tony McNamara. Director: Catherine Fitzgerald Designer: Mary Moore Composer: Ian Moorhead Cast includes: Chris Asimos, Rhiannon Owen Ever had a sneaking suspicion that Australian society is built on corruption, greed and self-serving narcissism? Then Tony McNamara's your man. But his latest play turns this misanthropic misgiving into a wisecracking, side-splitting, laugh-a-minute sitcom. From the first moment to the last, The Give and Take unabashedly goes for the laugh and gets it. There are, if you need that sort of thing, take-home messages about the emptiness of materialism and the corruption of family life, but basically this is a broad, smart-alecky satire about parenting, the younger generation and love that is strictly conditional and convertible to cash. Don is an executive. His mind should be on his firm's latest line of garden sprinklers. But his wife just told him she's leaving to have tantric sex in Tuscany. When he tells his three children, they aren't surprised: they're a self-absorbed trio only interested in Dad's money. Neil is a leftist layabout. Julie is a corporate cowgirl. And Damien is a steroid-stuffed gym-bunny. There's no reason why their cushy lifestyles shouldn't continue into the foreseeable future as long as Don doesn't do anything crazy...

Presented by Windmill in association with Adelaide Festival Centre's inSPACE Program ROBIN HOOD RETOLD It's a world where all bets are off. Corruption, sleaze and violence pervade. When a young boy is brutally attacked, one guy and his crew take the law into their own hands seeking retribution and a new world order in the depths of a dark forest. Young, sexy and invincible, the group lives large. But violence comes at a cost and Robin has secrets. Cracks appear and the friends face off. As they fight to keep it together, the enemy closes in and their world starts to implode. In the unique theatrical voice of Australia's Matthew Whittet, Fugitive is an anarchic, hysterical, knife-edge ride with a direct line out of the psyche of a contemporary anti-hero. By the director and designer team that created Windmill's The Wizard of Oz, Fugitive considers just how far a group of people will go for their ideals and the quest for justice? When does bad behaviour cross the line? And when do the oppressed become the perpetrators? Champion of the underdog, a fleeing desperado, a modern-day man in tights. Writer: Matthew Whittet Director: Rosemary Myers Designer: Jonathon Oxlade Starring: Patrick Graham, Geoff Revell, and Matthew Whittet Warning: Features language which may be considered offensive and depictions of violence

Adelaide Festival Centre's Pivot(al) program presents BANGARRA DANCE THEATRE'S 'OF EARTH AND SKY' A new double bill from Bangarra Dance Theatre in 2010 ‘Riley’ from Daniel Riley McKinley and ‘Artefacts’ from Frances Rings Following the extraordinary success of their 20th anniversary tour in 2009, Bangarra Dance Theatre leaps into the next 20 with a stunning new double-bill! Always innovative and exciting, Bangarra presents two stories inspired by the evolution and diversity of both traditional and contemporary visual art forms. Rejoining the company is highly regarded choreographer Frances Rings, who first made the move from dancer to creator with the company's Walkabout in 2002. Bangarra is also excited to introduce the new choreographic talents of Daniel Riley McKinley making his debut with this work. RILEY is a celebration of the life of the late Indigenous photographer Michael Riley and his acclaimed cloud series. Daniel Riley McKinley, who shares a connection with Michael through blood and land, explores the themes of connectedness to home soil, the invasion of natural forces and the cycle of life, death and spiritual rebirth. ARTEFACTS is inspired by the history between man and object. Artefacts is a moving passage into the world of these much respected but exploited relics. From museum antiquities and kitsch tourist souvenir through to the ancient tools imbued with symbolism this work is a powerful insight into the fragmented relationship that exists between them and us. “Performance with a passion and richness of culture.” The Advertiser Suitable 7+ years Post show Q&A follows 9 Sept performance.
Australian Dance Theatre in association with Adelaide Festival Centre's inSPACE program presents IGNITION Can any human movement be dance? Do we have to move to dance? Is talking dancing? Is there dance in stillness? What is dance technique? Can anyone dance? With a list of seemingly subversive questions, Australian Dance Theatre’s Artistic Director Garry Stewart provides a forum for a group of emerging choreographers to disrupt expectations of what we think dance, theatre, movement, ability and talent are and remind us that art comes from heretical investigation. ADT dancers and independent choreographers/directors present new short works that bring in to sharp focus the bisection between ‘dance’ and ‘not dance’. The Ignition program features the formidable and diverse talents of the ensemble of Australian Dance Theatre. Garry Stewart introduced Ignition as an annual choreographic season in 2000. Ignition provides Australian Dance Theatre dancers and young independent choreographers with the opportunity to develop their nascent skills in dance making as well as firing their imaginations through a creative process. Ignition has been an important springboard for many of Australia’s most promising choreographers with previous seasons showcasing early works by Tanja Liedtke, Antony Hamilton, Lina Limonsani and Larissa McGowan. “...do yourself a favour and book a ticket... Get scared, get turned on, and get crazy.” Libertine Magazine Post show forum follows 19 August performance. Suitable 15+ years.
Restless Dance Theatre in association with Adelaide Festival Centre's inSPACE program presents BEAUTY World Premiere Featuring five female dancers, Beauty investigates the notion of beauty and will explore Sir Francis Bacon’s famous idea that there is ‘no excellent beauty that hath not some strangeness in the proportion’. The dancers create images that are stunning yet strange, in response to classic images of women from visual art, taking a detailed and sculptural approach to the body. Exploring the notion of being or becoming an object of desire, the fleeting nature of youth, beauty and movement itself, the idea of being overcome by ‘unbearable’ beauty, and the despair, distance, terror and jealousy that beauty can evoke. Beauty also plays with the idea that in order to recognise beauty we must also see its opposite, with a constant hint of the sinister. The work delves into the nature of female friendships, playing with intimacy, independence, imitation, competition, envy, rejection and bitchiness. Beauty is proudly sumptuously and subversively feminine, and visually captivating with moments of exquisite power. Restless Dance Theatre is one of Australia’s leading youth dance companies, working with disabled and non-disabled people to generate a unique dance language that expresses the breadth of human truths to a wide audience. “Beauty is unbearable, drives us to despair, offering us for a minute the glimpse of an eternity that we should like to stretch out over the whole of time.” Albert Camus Suitable 8+ years.
Adelaide Festival Centre's Adelaide Cabaret Festival Presents BREL Enjoy a night of French Cabaret with JOHN WATERS. One of Australia’s most recognised and respected actors and singers, John Waters will perform a concert that highlights the songs of the great French Chanson singer-songwriter Jacques Brel. While many of Brel’s songs were recorded in English translation in the ‘60s and ‘70s by artists including Frank Sinatra, Neil Diamond, Dusty Springfield, and Ray Charles, Waters will perform them as the original French versions, explaining their significance along the way - sometimes comic, sometimes tragic, sometimes painfully romantic but always engrossing and compelling. Waters has been inspired by Brel’s songbook since he was in his teens, leading him to perform these incredible songs in late night shows in Sydney’s Kings Cross in the early 1970s. This eventually evolved into the critically acclaimed tribute show Cafe Brel in 1999. Now in this brand new incarnation, simply titled BREL, Waters will create and assume the character again, telling stories rich in dimensions that will arouse and entice you into the world and music of Jacques Brel. If you saw Waters’ popular John Lennon tribute Looking through a Glass Onion and loved it, then BREL is sure to cast a spell and get under your skin. “Waters makes the French connection.” Sydney Morning Herald Suitable 16+ years.
Adelaide Festival Centre's Australian Stories program presents a Steady Lads and Christine Dunstan production CODGERS by Don Reid Everyone either knows one, is related to one, lives with one - or is one! Eavesdrop on six senior Aussie men, some of them mates since war service, as they sweat it out together each week in a gym and are taken on inter-connected journeys that are challenging, touching and very funny. When secrets, differences and loss of trust threaten to destroy the long established friendships, they learn that ‘difference’ is more a matter of point of view; that ‘you wouldn’t be dead for quids’ and, no matter what, that you gotta laugh! Women see their husbands, adult children see their fathers, grandchildren see Grandad and the senior Australian male sees himself: whether he’s a WWII veteran, full of jokes and denial; a spry young lad of 60; scared and starting to lose it at 70; or Asian and still on the outer at 80. A comedy about ageing, friendship and being a codger. “This play has heart... the wit and warmth of the script, the ability of the characters to laugh at themselves.” Daily Telegraph With Ronald Falk, Ron Haddrick, Edwin Hodgeman, Jon Lam, Russell Newman and Shane Porteous Director Wayne Harrison Set & Costume Designer Nicholas Dare Lighting Designer Nicholas Higgins Winner of the prestigious Rodney Seaborn Playwright’s Award 2006 For full details regarding Season 2010, download the brochure here.
Presented by State Opera of South Australia THE PEARL FISHERS (Les Pêcheurs de Perles) George Bizet. Bizet's sensuous and romantic tale of love, jealousy and redemption, transports us to the land of the pearl fishers on the coast of Ceylon. Their chief, Zurga, meets up with his old friend Nadir and they recall in the world famous duet 'In the depths of the Temple' their former rivalry for the hand of the beautiful priestess Leila, who they renounced for the sake of their friendship. Leila arrives and prays to Brahma for the pearl fishers' safety when she and Nadir recognize each other and their love is immediately revived. Discovered by the outraged high priest Nourabad, the lovers are captured and brought before Zurga who instantly recognises Leila. Seized with jealousy he condemns them both to death but soon realises that it was Leila, as a small girl, who years earlier had saved his life. As Leila and Nadir prepare to face death together, Zurga cries out that the camp is on fire. As the pearl fishers rush away to fight the flames, Zurga releases Leila and Nadir telling them it was he who set fire to the camp. He tells Leila how he recognized her and declares that he is now repaying the debt he owes her. As the lovers escape, Zurga awaits his own death in the approaching fire. Bizet's beautiful score overflows with dramatic energy and in this visually captivating production reveals many wonderful sensuous and alluring images including the lush and mysterious Ceylonese landscape, the ruined temple at sunset, pearl divers and the enigmatic veiled beauty of Leila. The Pearl Fishers melds passion and exoticism into a spellbinding story.
Presented by State Opera of South Australia HANSEL & GRETEL - Engelbert Humperdinck. Left alone at home Hansel complains to his sister that he is hungry. Gretel shows him some milk that a neighbour has given them for family supper and to cheer themselves up she starts to teach her brother how to dance, only to be interrupted by the sudden return of their mother. Complaining how little work the children have done she angrily chases them into the woods to pick strawberries. Minutes later their father returns home, slightly intoxicated, but carrying plenty of food after a good day at work. Asking where his children are, he is horrified to hear that they have been sent into the woods and explains the danger this presents because of the evil witch that lives there. They rush off to seek them out. Meanwhile in the woods the children realise they have lost their way and grow increasingly frightened and tired eventually saying their prayers and falling asleep together. Awakened by the dew fairy they find themselves in front of a gingerbread house where they are immediately confronted by the Witch who casts a spell on them so they are unable to move. The Witch locks Hansel inside a cage so she can fatten him up for her supper. On overhearing the Witch's frightening plan Gretel succeeds in breaking the spell and she and Hansel manage to push her into the hot oven, which explodes bringing the enchanted gingerbread children back to life. THE BEST ABBA CONCERT SINCE ABBA THE WORLD'S MOST SUCCESSFUL TOURING ABBA SHOW After a sell out tour of the USA and highly successful run on London's West End including record-breaking seasons throughout Europe and South America, ABBA MANIA returns to tour Australia in 2010. ABBA MANIA is a spectacular musical event recreating on stage the last ever live concert by the Swedish disco sensation ABBA in 1979, including over two hours of uplifting, dance inducing hit songs, such as "Dancing Queen", "Mamma Mia", "Voulez Vous", "Waterloo", "Fernando", "Take A Chance On Me", "Super Trouper" and "The Winner Takes It All". ABBA MANIA brings to life the 70's era with vibrant costumes, extravagant lighting and all the endearing memories of the band that took over the disco world in one unforgettable night.
Presented by Brink Productions It's a rare and thrilling treat when contemporary, blood-soaked horror disgraces the stage, and Harbinger does just that. A tender 'boy meets girl, girl eats boy' love story caked in crimson humour, Harbinger by Matthew Whittet is as hilarious as it is unsettling. Think David Lynch meets Bram Stoker. Think Hitchcock meets Twilight. Think Freddy Krueger meets - actually, stop thinking and start preparing for what will be the funniest, juiciest, most disturbing theatre experience of 2010, or possibly even your life. Harbinger is a contemporary gothic surrealist thriller - a nightmarish dreamscape and black comedy rolled into a rich theatrical brew. Exploring the de-purification of innocence, Harbinger is compelling, disturbing, whimsical, funny, demanding and accessible. Filled with pop cultural references, it blends the humour of The Flight of the Concordes and the aesthetics of film-maker, David Lynch. Suitable for patrons in secondary schooling years 11 & 12 and above. Photo: Meg Hansen Image: Linehan Scott Design

Brink Productions' When The Rain Stops Falling by Andrew Bovell a collaboration with Hossein Valamanesh and Brink Productions RETURN SEASON - Five performances only before heading off on tour to Brisbane and Canberra. Alice Springs in the year 2039. A fish falls from the sky and lands at the feet of Gabriel York. It still smells of the sea. It's been raining for days and Gabriel knows something is wrong. Eighty years earlier, his grandfather, Henry Law predicted that, in 2039, fish would fall from the sky heralding a great flood that would overcome the human race. When The Rain Stops Falling takes place between the worlds of these two men - between a prediction in 1959 and its outcome eighty years later. Through four generations of interconnected stories, from the claustrophobia of a small 1950s London flat to the windswept coast of South Australia and into the heart of the Australian desert, When The Rain Stops Falling follows the central journey of Gabriel Law as he retraces his father Henry's footsteps in an attempt to solve the mystery of his disappearance. At a roadhouse in the Coorong he meets a young woman named Gabrielle. Two wounded souls in a wild landscape, their connection is instant and powerful. As the young lovers' story unfolds amidst the interweaving narratives of their ancestors and descendants we are led back to 2039... to Gabriel York as he arrives home with the fish to await the arrival of his own estranged son. A son he knows will come seeking answers. A son he knows will want to understand the past. But for Gabriel York the past is as mysterious as the fish. Photo: Jeff Busby

Presented by Michael Coppel Presents AUSTRALIAN TOUR MARCH 2010 With special guest KASEY CHAMBERS Lyle Lovett takes to the road for his first-ever Australian tour playing dates nationally in March 2010. The four-time Grammy winner is one of America's finest singer-songwriters, leading a remarkable 20-year career spanning 13 albums and over four million records sold. Finely wrought and full of wit, wisdom and Texas-sized storytelling, the veteran songwriter's catalogue is rife with characters and concepts that loom large on the American landscape. Fans can expect to hear classics, favourites and a selection of new songs taken from his forthcoming album release Natural Forces, in-stores November 27 (Sony Music). Lovett, with his Large Band, are currently touring across the US. "... the long, tall Texan's entire two-and-a-half hour performance felt like the best kind of soul-stirring church service, full of joy, solemnity, reverence and contemplation." The Boston Globe "His wry voice and parched-dry vocals were consistent through the night - as good at the start of the show as in the encore." New York Post "The two-and-a-half hour performance cut a wide swath through Lovett's category-elusive personal songbook: gospel and soul, heartfelt ballads, jazz, bluegrass, swing and straight-up pedal steel country." The Charleston Post & Courier Lovett's music uniquely intersects an array of genres from country and folk to big-band swing and traditional pop as evidenced by such well-known songs as If I Had a Boat, Nobody Knows Me, South Texas Girl, She's No Lady, Baby Don't Tolerate, In My Own Mind and revered albums as Lyle Lovett, Pontiac, Joshua Judges Ruth, The Road To Ensenada and most recently, It's Not Big It's Large. Another facet of Lovett's career is acting, most recently appearing in The Open Road directed by Michael Meredith. He also appeared in four Robert Altman films: The Player, Short Cuts, Pret-a-Porter, and Cookie's Fortune, and scored the music for another: Dr. T and the Women. In the end, though, it's the music to which Lovett always returns and the song that is always central. Natural Forces is Lovett's 12th album, featuring four original tunes, along with seven covers of works by Texas songwriters, including Eric Taylor?s Whooping Crane, Vince Bell's Sun and Moon and Stars and Townes Van Zandt's Loretta. Special guest on the national tour will be Australia's premiere country female singer-songwriter KASEY CHAMBERS. Her natural, outstanding musical talents have made Kasey a household name. The last four albums have all reached #1 and all five albums achieving platinum plus sales. Kasey's debut release earned the ARIA for Best Country Release. The following year she was awarded Best Female Artist, and reached the Top 50 of the Billboard Country Album Chart. The accolades have continued, notching up multiple ARIA, APRA, and Golden Guitar Awards. Earlier this month a family collaboration album was released - Kasey Chambers, Poppa Bill & The Little Hillbillies, along with Kasey's first children's book. http://www.lylelovett.com/ http://www.kaseychambers.com/ http://www.coppel.com.au/

The reaction new viewers have to Emma Hack’s work is usually one of complete amazement. Drawn in by the exquisite designs and striking representations of animals, it is not long before they realise “there’s a person in there!” and the questions begin. How does she do it? Surely it’s superimposed? How long does it take? Does the model really have the stand there the whole time? For her most recent collection, Mandala, Emma Hack has painstakingly camouflaged the human form into hand painted mandala designs. Native Mandala offers a utopian view of the essence of Australia in these stunning depictions of native wildlife; mammals, birds and reptiles appear to leap from the luscious native floral setting, seeming to overtake the presence of humans. Exotic Mandala captures the beauty of art nouveau inspired designs with butterflies placed on the models. Wallpaper Mandala, combines wallpaper designs in a collage background into which her muse is artfully blended. Emma Hack is represented by Gallery 139, 139 Magill Road, Stepney.

Presented by Kay and McLean Productions Pty Ltd, Arnold M Crook, Paul Elliott, Nigel Everett and Duncan C Weldon in association with HVK Productions and Michael Coppel It is with much anticipation and excitement Kay and McLean Productions Pty Ltd, Arnold M Crook, Paul Elliott, Nigel Everett and Duncan C Weldon in association with HVK Productions and Michael Coppel today announce they will present the Theatre Royal Haymarket Company's record-breaking and awardwinning production of Samuel Beckett's Waiting for Godot starring Ian McKellen, Roger Rees and Matthew Kelly. "It is almost certainly the funniest and most compassionate production of the play you will ever see." Daily Telegraph (UK), 2010 Two old friends meet to converse, joke and argue with themselves as they wait through one day and then another for the mysterious Godot...the combination of music hall, poetry and tension redefined what is possible in theatre, so that today Waiting for Godot is accepted as one of the most significant plays of the 20th century. "Masterly McKellen glitters". London Evening Standard, 2010 Following its record-breaking season last year at the Theatre Royal Haymarket (for both the play and the theatre) Waiting for Godot will conclude its hugely successful return season in the West End before touring to Melbourne (Comedy Theatre), Perth (His Majesty's Theatre), Adelaide (Her Majesty's Theatre), Sydney (as part of the Adventures 2010 Program, Sydney Opera House) and New Zealand from May to July of this year. When Samuel Beckett's play exploded on to the stage 50 years ago, it shocked as many people as it delighted. There had never been a play like it; indeed it was said that: "(Beckett) has achieved a theoretical impossibility-a play in which nothing happens, that yet keeps audiences glued to their seats." "The theatrical event of the year" Daily Express (UK) Waiting for Godot is directed by Sean Mathias and stars Ian McKellen as Estragon and Roger Rees as Vladamir with Matthew Kelly as Pozzo. For the full information about Waiting for Godot including cast biographies, visit www.waitingforgodottheplay.com "It's harrowing, it's funny, it's human: go and see it, and laugh till you cry."
One of today's most versatile and accomplished entertainers - pianist, singer, composer and bandleader - Connick has extended his Australian tour to an intimate Adelaide performance. It will be ten years since Harry Connick Jr. last played Adelaide, headlining at the Entertainment Centre, so this is a rare opportunity for his many South Australian fans to see him in an intimate theatre setting. Connick was last in Australia 2 years ago, following the release of Oh, My NOLA, music inspired by his hometown of New Orleans and a companion album of instrumentals by Connick's big band, Chanson du Vieux Carre. Connick frolicked and hi-jinxed his way through a two-hour set like a kid at Christmas. Perth Now I was lucky enough to bear witness to a music aficionado, consummate performer and showman. Inpress Your Songs (Sony Music, 2009) is Connick's most recent release, offering his own fresh take on familiar, classic tunes such as The Carpenter's Close To You, Billy Joel's Just The Way You Are, Roberta Flack's First Time Ever I Saw Your Face and Nat King Cole's Mona Lisa. Connick's illustrious career spans more than 30 years. He made his first public performance at age five, appeared on his first jazz recording at age ten and released his self-titled major label debut for Columbia Records at 19 - a year after his high school graduation and relocation to New York. Connick has released 25 albums, sold more than 25 million albums worldwide and has been deservedly honoured with numerous award nominations and accolades including three Grammys and an Emmy. Commercial breakthrough came for Connick in 1989 with his When Harry Met Sally film score, his first multi-platinum album. Best-selling masterpieces also include double-platinum success It Had To Be You, Blue Light Red Light, Forever Now, triple-platinum She and the ballad collection Only You. Connick's talents extend beyond music, making his acting debut the World War II film in Memphis Belle (1990). Further credits include Copy Cat, Independence Day, P.S. I Love You plus the reoccurring character Dr. Leo Markus in Will & Grace. Don't miss Harry Connick, Jr. and orchestra performing this March.

Australian Tour March 2010 Legendary guitarist Jeff Beck returns to perform four select theatre shows during his March 2010 Australian tour. Beck, who was admitted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame earlier this year, is universally hailed as one of the greatest guitarists ever, mentioned in the same breath as Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page, and listed by Rolling Stone magazine as one of the 15 most influential lead guitarists in rock. In January 2009 Beck performed his first Australian shows since 1977 to rapturous reviews and standing ovations. Scheduled to release a just completed new studio album in February, the guitar virtuoso returns to perform in Adelaide, Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne. Beck's career has spanned an incredible 40 years. First stepping into the public spotlight in the mid-60s, Beck replaced Clapton in the Yardbirds, recording classic hits Heart Full of Soul and Shapes of Things before moving on in 1967 at the height of the band's popularity. Beck later formed the blues infused Jeff Beck Group, featuring Rod Stewart on vocals and Ronnie Wood on bass. The group released Truth ('68) and Beck-Ola ('69) but soon disbanded. In 1975 Beck released the first of two landmark albums. Blow By Blow, produced by George Martin, a groundbreaking instrumental jazz-fusion album, followed by a collaboration with Jan Hammer on Wired ('76). Both these albums received critical acclaim as well as commercial success, and are still listed amongst the top-selling guitarist instrumental albums of all time. Beck continued to release albums intermittently through the 80s and 90s, including 1985's Flash featuring Beck's most commercially successful single People Get Ready with old band-mate Rod Stewart on vocals. That album is also home to Escape, the tune that won Beck the first of 4 Grammy Awards for Best Rock Instrumental. Following the acclaimed release of Performing This Week? Live at Ronnie Scott's, Beck returned to Australia after an absence of 32 years, wielding his trademark white Fender Stratocaster and leaving audiences in awe. "It all appeared so effortless but he managed his tone and volume swells so skilfully that few, if any, could replicate his abilities live." - Australian Guitar Magazine "The final encore Where Were You? was a gorgeous exhibition of harmonics and whammy; a serene and sublime close that held the recently-raucous crowd in silent thrall." - Fasterlouder "What followed was 90 minutes of alternating bone-jarring power in songs such as Blast and Pump and the fine delicacy of Nadia and Where Were You, in a performance remarkable for it's nuance and structure." - The Age "His touch was surgeon-like as he brought colour and shade to the mostly original tunes. So much power appeared to result from so little effort." - The Australian Most recently Jeff Beck was invited to perform at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 25th Anniversary concerts held at Madison Square Gardens this October. Jeff surprised rapturous a crowd on the first night by coming out to play Superstition with Stevie Wonder. On the 2nd night Jeff and his band played with special guests Sting, Buddy Guy and Billy Gibbons, driving the crowd wild and drawing phenomenal reviews.

The London Daily Telegraph hailed his playing as 'incisive, impassioned and characterful'. The critic could have added 'charismatic', as few other artists in the world today radiate the unique platform presence of Tognetti. His performance of the greatest concerto in the violin repertoire on his 1743 Guaneri del Gesù instrument will be something to cherish. Tognetti then turns his hand to conducting Antonin Dvořák's sublimely lyrical Eighth Symphony, a work brimming with warmth, exuberant dance rhythms and al fresco scenes from the sunlit meadows of his native Bohemia.

Arvo Volmer: Conductor Peter Jablonski: Piano Tchaikovsky: Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture Chopin: Piano Concerto No 2 Berlioz: Romeo and Juliet: Lovescene Bernstein: West Side Story: Symphonic Dances The extreme and ultimately fatal passion of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet has cast a spell over composers as diverse as Piotr Tchaikovsky and Leonard Bernstein. Tchaikovsky's 20 minute distillation of the play is among the most beloved works in the repertoire where the composer reveals his deeply romantic spirit. In West Side Story, Bernstein transferred the setting from 16th century Verona to the mean streets of New York, where rival street gangs express themselves in dance. Former Vladimir Ashkenazy protégé, Peter Jablonski, described by The Australian as 'a young eagle in full flight', brings the true spirit of Poland to Chopin's Second Piano Concerto in the composer'S 200th anniversary year.

No other podium wizard has used the orchestral palette as vividly as Leopold Stokowski, whose legendary arrangement of JS Bach's Toccata and Fugue, originally created for Walt Disney's Fantasia, allows every orchestral section to shine. The Sorcerer's Apprentice has long been many music lovers' first truly spell-binding musical experience.
Presented by Adrian Bohm Foster & Allen began back in the seventies when Mick & Tony were playing in Country Music bands around Ireland. In 1975 they formed a small group and went over to the UK to work the Irish music venues on a short tour. Mick & Tony had at this stage the idea of working together as a duo, playing 'easy listening' music with a touch of traditional Irish instrumentals. When their UK tour finished they decided to let the band return to Ireland whilst they stayed behind to try and break into the public eye. They played several venues in the London area and the reaction was very favourable; so much so, they decided to remain as a duo and Foster & Allen was formed. It was difficult at the beginning and after a time working around the circuit in the UK & Ireland, they released their first single record The Rambles of Spring. This made a good impact on the Irish market and Foster & Allen were soon in demand for cabaret venues all over Ireland and to a lesser extent the UK. At the end of 1978 Foster & Allen released the single A Bunch Of Thyme in Ireland, and it entered the Irish charts and became their first top-selling No. 1 single. It was not until 1982 that this single was released in the UK. It was played by all the radio stations in Britain and was soon in the pop charts. It climbed rapidly to number 18 in the UK Singles Chart. At the time, Mick & Tony were in the U.S. on a tour. They were contacted and told to fly back to Britain immediately as they were required to appear on television's Top of the Pops. Demand for Foster & Allen's services at venues all over Ireland and the UK increased at this point. They released another single Old Flames which also made its way into the UK Charts. They did their first concert tour of the UK in 1983 and this tour was boosted even more by the release of another single Maggie. This reached number 27 in the UK singles chart and, along with A Bunch Of Thyme, these became the signature tunes for the duo. Since then they have toured the UK twice each year. In addition to the UK tours, Foster & Allen have toured the U.S, Canada, South Africa, Australia & New Zealand. They had five No. 1 Hits in Australia/New Zealand. They have also appeared on numerous TV shows in Ireland, Scotland, England & Wales as well as Australia, USA & Canada, and they have had their own TV series on RTE Television in Ireland. In the early days Mick & Tony performed on stage as a duo, but in 1982 (when the concert tours started) they added a band to their show thus giving a much fuller sound to their program. On the recording front, Foster & Allen have to date released a total of 27 albums, all of which have gone into the British charts. This is a great achievement for a middle-of-the-road 'easy listening' act. As well as the albums, they have released thirteen videos, again all of which have entered the British charts. The video Souvenirs and Memories reached No. 3 in the British charts around Christmas 1991, the By Request video went straight into the No. 1 spot in 1993 and their latest DVD/Video release After All These Years was a Top 10 Chart Release in the UK. To date Foster & Allen have achieved album & video sales in excess of 19 million worldwide. Foster & Allen celebrated their 30th Anniversary together in the music industry with the release of their new album Foster & Allen Sing The No. 1's which was a Top 30 Chart hit in the UK during Christmas 2005 bringing the sales of their last three albums in the UK & Ireland to over 500,000 units. The duo recently completed their "World Concert Tour - 2005/2006" which took them on tour to the United Kingdom, Canada, South Africa, Ireland, U.S.A. & Australia.

Presented by Adelaide Symphony Orchestra Master Series 12 - TRIUMPHANT SHOSTAKOVICH. Arvo Volmer: Conductor Bernd Glemser: Piano Anne Cawrse: New Work (Schueler Prize 2010)* Rachmaninov: Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini Liszt: Totentanz Shostakovich: Symphony No 5 This concert includes a special work commissioned by the ASO with the support of the Schueler Composition Award (2010), established through the generosity of Mr Norman Schueler and Mrs Carol Schueler, in honour of Mrs Gogo Schueler. Bernd Glemser, with rock solid technique and take-no-prisoners virtuosity, is equally at home with Liszt's wonderfully macabre bravura and the quicksilver brilliance and wit of Rachmaninov. Shostakovich's Fifth Symphony originally titled 'A Soviet Artist's Reply to Just Criticism' with the uniquely visceral excitement of its climaxes, is one of the few twentieth century symphonies to acquire the coveted status of a 'classic'. Is there an undercurrent of cynicism and irony beneath the epic dimensions? You be the judge. * WORLD PREMIERE

Presented by Adelaide Symphony Orchestra Master Series 13 - SCHEHERAZADE. Arvo Volmer: Conductor Kalle Randalu: Piano Brahms: Piano Concerto No 2 Rimsky-Korsakov: Scheherazade Estonian keyboard master Kalle Randalu makes his Australian debut in Brahms' Second Piano Concerto, one of the most expansive piano concertos, composed at the high water mark of Brahms' mature inspiration. Despite its grand symphonic dimensions, the mood of its adagio is intimate and reflective and the finale charming. Then, in Rimsky-Korsakov's Scheherazade, one of the most dazzling orchestral showpieces ever composed, Arvo Volmer and the orchestra will beguile you with beautiful sounds, just as Scheherazade mesmerized the cruel sultan with her exotic tales.
