Insite Arts and Adelaide Festival Centre’s inSPACE program present Angelique by isthisyours?

Posted by Adelaide Festival Centre on Friday 25 August 2017

Adelaide Festival Centre as part of its inSPACE development program and Insite Arts proudly present the world premiere of Angelique by Adelaide’s highly acclaimed theatre company isthisyours? for a limited season in Her Majesty’s Theatre from 13 – 21 October.

Curiously Alice in Wonderland-esque in its quirky, black-comedic narrative, Angelique captures audiences’ imaginations. Young Angelique is starting to see the world crack open in front of her eyes: her sister is missing, her parents are acting like strangers, and a talking bird haunts her day and night. Unusual theatre ushers and subtle clues will help the audience and Angelique on a sometimes exciting, sometimes scary journey of discovery as Angelique tries to make sense of her place in a world turned upside down.

Angelique is the latest work from Adelaide’s isthisyours?, an all-female independent theatre collective committed to making engaging new theatre for audiences ready to embrace new ideas and concepts. Angelique was created with Her Majesty’s Theatre in mind. The production engages with the venue, inviting audiences to lift the veil on the ordinarily unseen and discover Her Majesty’s Theatre in a new light before it undergoes a dramatic renewal in 2018.

Director Tessa Leong: Angelique is a play that is at once funny, thrilling and disturbing. I am truly excited to have crafted a journey for an audience in Her Majesty‘s Theatre unlike any other in Adelaide's rich theatrical history.”

Designer Jonathon Oxlade: “The entire team is excited to be let loose in Her Majesty’s Theatre. It's an incredible space... especially beyond the stage. It's rare to build a show from the inside out (theatres are usually a place where you put a show into) so this is going to be new for us and our audience.”

Performer/Founding Member/Company Manager isthisyours? Jude Henshall: Adelaide Festival Centre’s inSPACE program has been instrumental in the creation of Angelique. The company was given valuable time and space to develop the work over a long period of time, which gave the project leverage to secure further grants to take it through to presentation.”

Adelaide Festival Centre CEO & Artistic Director Douglas Gautier AM: Angelique is another great example of Adelaide Festival Centre’s collaborations with local arts ensembles. We are very pleased to have supported its development through the inSPACE program and are delighted to have our Her Majesty’s Theatre graced by such a unique and creative production.”

Follow Angelique behind the mirror and prepare to expect the unexpected.

This project is supported by the Australian Government through the Australia Council, its arts funding and advisory body, Vitalstatistix and their Incubator residency program, and assisted by State Theatre Company South Australia.

About isthisyours?:
isthisyours? is a South Australian-based theatre company that creates original and unconventional performance for a smart, risk taking audience that revel in the possibilities of live theatre. The company ethos is to search for humour in the serious, and find significance in the ridiculous, all to challenge the world’s seeming certainties. They are Tessa Leong, Jude Henshall, Louisa Mignone, Nadia Rossi and Ellen Steele, and have been collaborating since meeting at Flinders Drama Centre, forming isthisyours? in 2006. They make performance to bring people together and to challenge notions of what is certain. They are in cahoots with those who embrace adventure and ideas, big and small. They aim to make audiences smile, converse and respond to tiny brilliance in the world around us.

About Adelaide Festival Centre’s inSPACE program:
Nothing epitomises Adelaide Festival Centre’s collaborative, cutting-edge spirit as much as its annual inSPACE program. inSPACE supports and nurtures local artists to create new and ground breaking work while engaging audiences throughout the process, blurring the creative line between artist and audience, and reinforcing Adelaide Festival Centre’s foundation philosophy that the arts belong to everyone.
