Adelaide to host Australia-Singapore cultural leaders’ forum

Adelaide Festival Centre and the South Australian Museum will host a two-day forum on 28 and 29 September, for over 150 senior arts industry and cultural delegates from across Australia and Singapore to broaden understanding of the sectors in both countries, build networks, and identify opportunities for collaborations and program sharing.

Topics will include: youth, education and multiculturalism; policy making in creative cities; audience development; and forging creative connections. The forum will also provide a platform to share ideas and discuss issues in break-out panel sessions, and further promote and position South Australia as a leader in Asian arts.

The forum is an initiative of the Australia-Singapore Arts Group and is supported by the Australian Government. It will assist with strengthening arts and cultural engagement between the two countries and build on commitments made under the Australia-Singapore Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation in the Field of Arts and Culture signed in June 2015.

Keynote addresses will be given on the first day by Minister Mitch Fifield (Minister for Communications, Minister of the Arts, Manager of Government Business in the Senate), Minister Grace Fu (Minister for Culture, Community and Youth, Singapore), Jack Buckskin (Kaurna Language Coordinator, Teacher and Cultural Educator), Rosa Daniel (Deputy Secretary (Culture), Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth, and CEO of the National Arts Council Singapore), Mat Trinca (Director, National Museum of Australia), and Douglas Gautier (CEO and Artistic Director, Adelaide Festival Centre).

Day two will begin with a keynote address by South Australian Governor and OzAsia Festival Patron, His Excellency the Honourable Hieu Van Le.

Additional panellists on day one include Angelita Teo (Director, National Museum of Singapore), Paul Tan (Deputy CEO, National Arts Council Singapore), Tony Grybowski (CEO, Australia Council), Claire Spencer (CEO, Arts Centre Melbourne), Duncan Ord (Director General, Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries, WA), Lynley Marshall (CEO, Museums Victoria), Kate Cherry (Director/CEO, The National Institute of Dramatic Art), Chris Saines (Director, Queensland Art Gallery and Gallery of Modern Art), Chong Siak Ching (CEO, National Gallery Singapore), and Lim Geok Cheng (Principal, School of the Arts Singapore).

Participants will also be entertained by OzAsia Festival Singaporean artists – musicians SA and Parts One and Two of theatrical epic Hotel, by award-winning company W!ld Rice – as well as Australia’s hip-hop feminist stars Hot Brown Honey and virtuoso guitarist duo, Slava and Leonard Grigoryan.

Day two of the forum will also include welcomes by Brian Oldman (Director, South Australian Museum), Bruce Gosper (Australian High Commissioner to Singapore), and Kwok Fook Seng (High Commissioner to Australia), before round table discussions and presentations themed by Museums, Galleries, Music (Orchestras and Contemporary Music), Performing Arts Centres/Festivals, and Young People and Education.
