Ólafur Arnalds at London's Royal Albert Hall: '’Deceptively Simple yet Quietly Devastating'’ Culture Trip

Iceland’s BAFTA Award-winning pianist-composer-producer Ólafur Arnalds will bring his captivating and transcendent music to Adelaide Festival Centre this December as part of his first global tour in three years.

Internationally celebrated for his haunting musical style, Ólafur fuses elements of ambient, classical, electronic, pop and rock to create a unique sound.

Since 2013, when Arnalds was last in Adelaide, his reputation has grown exponentially, resulting in sell-out performances this year including at the Royal Albert Hall in London.

Performing new compositions from his fourth ‘official’ album, re:member, to be released in August, Arnalds will be backed by a seven-piece band, including a string quartet. Arnalds will also debut his algorithmic device which transforms the humble piano into a completely new instrument triggering two self-playing, semi-generative pianos.

The custom built and ground-breaking software Stratus, is the product of two years of work by the composer and audio developer Halldór Eldjârn, creating unexpected harmonies and surprising melodic sequences.

Ólafur Arnalds said: “The self-playing pianos are a jolt to the creative process that forces me to try new and often surprising things. In a live setting the pianos are an integral part of the performance due to their generative nature. Each time they are played is a little different, making every performance unique.”
