An Australia/Scotland dance-theatre collaboration
The world premiere of THE SPINNERS, created by renowned South Australian choreographer and dancer Lina Limosani and award-winning Scottish director Al Seed comes to Adelaide Festival Centre’s Space Theatre from 11 to 13 July.
In an exhilarating ride into myth and imagination, THE SPINNERS will plunge audiences into the story of the Fates of Greek mythology as part of Adelaide Festival Centre’s inSPACE program, a cutting-edge, grassroots program that supports some of Australia’s most talented independent artists.
Virtuoso Australian dancers Tara Jade Samaya and Kialea-Nadine Williams will join Limosani on stage to play the three Fates who spin, measure and cut the thread of life, creating an emotionally charged dance-theatre performance which weaves together themes of mortality, freewill and sisterhood.
Along with Limosani as choreographer and Seed as director, are Tony Award winner Nigel Levings as lighting designer, Guy Veale as sound designer and Wendy Todd as set designer.
“When long-term friend Al Seed suggested to me the Moirai - Greek goddesses of fate and destiny - as a theme for a collaboration, I did some research and could see that this – and related stories – were saturated with magical images which could be explored through dance and physicality,” Limosani said.
THE SPINNERS brings the Fates down to earth and re-imagines them living in the heart of a sprawling city. From their humble apartment, they oversee the births and deaths of all human beings, forming a giant web of the interconnectedness of all human journeys.
THE SPINNERS marks a continuation of Seed and Limosani’s exploration of cross-artform collaboration and demonstrates how contemporary dance can provide a vehicle for intelligent and provocative storytelling. This project is also a timely exploration of the female figure in ancient mythology.
Limosani has won a number of awards for her latest work Not Today’s Yesterdays, including the 2018 Adelaide Fringe Award for Best Dance. Seed has received Total Theatre, Fringe First and Herald Angel Awards for work presented at Edinburgh Fringe, and a Jerwood Foundation Award, for such shows as Raw Beef, The Fooligan and Oog.
THE SPINNERS is being produced and toured by Lee-Anne Donnolley of Far & Away Productions. Following Adelaide, THE SPINNERS will have a season at Dance Base during the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
