With over eighty years of design history, representing every genre of live performance, these designs give an amazing illustrative glimpse into South Australia’s performing arts history.
Costume renderings not only demonstrate the designer's drawing skills but also their creativity, expertise and vision in transforming their two-dimensional designs into three-dimensional costumes. The Collection holds examples from distinguished names such Sainthill, Goodchild, Rowell, Moisewitsch, Moore, Kirk and Arrighi who show their creative processes when interpretating characters through costumes for the stage.
South Australian Ailsa Paterson started designing professionally after graduating from the exclusive Bachelor of Dramatic Art (Design) at NIDA in 2003. Since then, she has continuously created detailed costumes and sets for theatre, opera, dance, film and television. She was Resident Designer for the State Theatre Company of South Australia in 2019.
Tanya Moiseiwitsch (1914-2003) is a pioneering and prominent figure in twentieth century theatre design. Usually designing both costumes and sets for the productions in which she was involved, Moiseiwitsch’s unique creations were commissioned for premier drama and opera companies in the United States, Canada, Australia, and her native England.
Polish-born artist, Joseph Stanislaus Ostoja-Kotkowski emigrated to Australia in 1949 and was integral to the post-war development of the arts in the country. He worked mainly in painting and photography, chromasonics, laser kinetics and 'sound and image' productions. Ostoja-Kotkowski contributed to South Australian performing arts and theatre as a set designer.
