This mural of controversial figures by Robert Boynes was inspired by placards that the artist saw around the city. The work evokes an underlying feeling of resentment towards authority. A theme typical of the time, but the mood is compassionate as much as it is militant. Each panel is designed as a separate entity, which work independently and as a whole mural. A variety of techniques have been used across the six panels including, screen printing, drawing, washed paint, airbrushing and hand-painting.
Boynes’ mural was originally installed in the foyer of the Space Theatre at Adelaide Festival Centre. At that time, all six panels could be slid aside to reveal a blackboard upon which viewers could write or draw in chalk, extending the graffiti element evident in Boynes’ early political works. The interactive nature of the work also allowed for the configuration of panels to be changed. In 1993, due to years of interactive engagement the artwork was relocated to preserve the integrity of the piece for generations to come.
Boynes studied at the South Australian School of Art from 1959 to 1961 and undertook postgraduate studies in printmaking and filmmaking. His social conscience has informed his art since the beginning of his career.
