Adelaide Festival Centre’s First Nations Fellowship - Jayda Wilson

Adelaide Festival Centre’s First Nations Fellowship provides an important opportunity for emerging First Nations arts professionals. Over the past 12 months, we’ve had the privilege of witnessing Jayda Wilson's growth and impact.

Jayda's favourite project during the fellowship was defi-Nations. Having participated as an artist in the previous year's program, she was thrilled to return in 2024 as a curator, championing a new cohort of First Nations artists. The project gave Jayda the opportunity to create space for younger and emerging voices, a reflection of her deep commitment to amplifying First Nations stories.

"There is so much talent in the SA First Nations writers scene, and it was a joy to curate and take the lead on the project."

Proudly supported by Adelaide Festival Centre Foundation, the First Nations Fellowship has offered Jayda invaluable insights into the intricacies of arts administration. She learned the procedures for delivering significant First Nations programming events like OUR MOB and OUR WORDS, and gained crucial skills in managing artist cohorts and navigating challenging situations

One of Jayda's most significant takeaways was the importance of celebrating achievements and taking time to reflect. "We often forget to acknowledge these wins because we instantly think about what is next. Take that break – rest is resistance."

The First Nations Fellowship has provided Jayda with a deeper understanding of the relationship between artists and arts administrators, and has significantly expanded her leadership skills. "As a practicing artist, I have developed a deeper understanding of the work that happens to platform artists and the delivery of events. I have formed a new appreciation for that relationship between artist and arts administrators."

For those considering applying for the First Nations Fellowship position, Jayda's message is clear: "Just do it!". She acknowledged the building seemed intimidating at first but emphasised the incredible support from the programming team. Jayda also added a powerful reminder:

"It comes with its complexities but as First Nations people we are here to bring our knowledges that are often overlooked (but not our role to educate). Always stand in your power."

Adelaide Festival Centre's First Nations Fellowship is an important opportunity for emerging First Nations arts professionals, providing a platform to learn and grow. Jayda's journey continues as she steps into the role of Kumarangk Associate Producer with Country Arts SA. "It’s super exciting and daunting. Definitely feels like I’ve jumped a few steps ahead."

Jayda's story is a testament to the power of opportunity and the importance of investing in First Nations voices and fostering First Nations arts professionals.

"To those that have supported this program, thank you. It was an incredible opportunity as working in the arts sector felt unattainable and it would be incredible to see this continue."

We congratulate Jayda on the next step in her journey and can’t wait to see the impact she makes as a bold and inspiring First Nations arts leader.
