Tina Community Night 2024 2

A group of 20 young community members and emerging creatives were invited to enjoy a performance of Tina – The Tina Turner Musical on the evening of 23 May 2024, at Festival Theatre, thanks to the support of TEG Dainty and Adelaide Festival Centre’s TIX for ALL program.

Invited to attend by Adelaide Festival Centre’s Community Engagement Coordinator the group toured the Festival Theatre foyers, experienced the spectacular musical production and participated in a Q&A with some of the cast and creative team after the show.

The cast and inspirational story featured in Tina – The Tina Turner Musical made it an ideal first foray to the theatre for our invited community members who have a keen interest in the arts. Many of the participants had never seen a show at Adelaide Festival Centre or experienced a major musical production live. Initiatives like this are key to Adelaide Festival Centre’s commitment to Arts for All.

Some of the participants had their first taste of theatre earlier this year, when they devised their own original piece What Do You Remember (A Memorial for the Child Within), which was performed at Northern Sound System in Elizabeth and won the Adelaide Fringe Festival’s Cultural Diversity Award. Adelaide Festival Centre is thrilled to be able to help provide these emerging artists with a pathway to continue their journey in the arts and theatre world.

It was my first experience at the Festival Theatre and to me it left a really good impression. I look forward to more experiences like this in the future. I am truly grateful for the opportunity to not only witness the show but to also gather firsthand insight from the performers.

This was my introduction to Tina, and I am thankful for it. I felt the actor truly embodied her spirit. I can tell that the team worked hard to honour the career of a phenomenal woman. Through her art and story, she inspires people to keep searching for something deeper and stronger.

— Shabani

I thought the show was an amazing experience. To have such a massive team and deliver messages that were extremely deep was incredible to see. Not for a second it felt like I was watching actors play Tina Turner, and the supporting cast, but it felt like I was watching Tina Turner herself and words cannot describe how important that was.

— Isaac

I thought the show was absolutely phenomenal I loved every moment of it, I even forgot to blink sometimes because I didn’t want to miss a moment.

I am grateful for the opportunity to meet young Black creatives from across the globe during the Q&A session. Hearing about the lessons learned and struggles of their journeys within this project and their respective careers, receiving their invaluable advice was incredibly inspiring for us as emerging Black creatives.
