The Mastersingers of Nuremberg, Act III
By Richard Wagner
Presented by State Opera SA
In 2018 it will be twenty years since State Opera of South Australia mounted the first Australian production of Wagner’s monumental Ring Cycle. To celebrate this milestone, we present Australian and international Wagner specialist singers in the third act of the much-loved The Mastersingers of Nuremberg in a gala performance in Festival Theatre. The third and final act of this compositional triumph is a chance for great voices to shine, as the ardent young Walther, guided by the wise cobbler Hans Sachs, competes in the Mastersingers song contest for the hand of the beautiful Eva. Not even the opposition of his vengeful rival Beckmesser can stand in the way of his ultimate triumph.
The concert will mark the welcome return to our roster of Kate Ladner as Eva, together with international star tenor Bradley Daley as Walther, leading Australian bass baritone Shane Lowrencev as Hans Sachs and acclaimed British Wagner specialist Andrew Shore as Beckmesser. Nicholas Braithwaite will lead the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra and State Opera Chorus.
Sung in German with English surtitle translations
