The Adelaide Festival Centre Works of Art Collection is a disparate group of works of art that are as much about the history of the Festival Centre as they are about the history of the works of art and artists themselves in Australia’s contemporary art story.
Originally established in 1970 when over-subscribed funds from the public appeal to build the Festival Theatre were set aside to commission and purchase works of art by leading artists of that time including Fred Williams and Sydney Ball.
In 2001-2003, through a generous donation from the Adelaide City Council, Foundation the Adelaide Festival Centre Foundation Indigenous Art Collection was established. This unique collection by contemporary Australian Indigenous artists acknowledges celebrates and honours South Australian and national Indigenous cultures, stories and people.
