French Guise takes inspiration from the extraordinary life of Julie d'Aubigny - 'La Maupin' - a seventeenth century bisexual sword-fighting opera singer.

As the story is told, she once defeated three men in duels in a single evening, and famously burnt down a convent in order to escape with her female lover. She notably debuted operatic roles composed by some of the era's most distinguished composers.

Baroque and contemporary music combine with martial arts, as French Guise explores contemporary gender and sexuality stereotyping through the lens of La Maupin’s remarkable example.
