The works featured in the phone booths are an extension of Intertwined: Works from Prospect Civic Collection and Adelaide Festival Centre Works of Art Collection.
Prospect Civic Art Collection and Adelaide Festival Centre Works of Art Collection were founded only a few years apart in the late 1960s and early 1970s, at a time of change socially and in the arts when Fibre Arts and the Community Arts Movement broke new ground.
City of Prospect’s Civic Art Collection began with the donation of a historic painting in 1969 and has grown to house 125 works by contemporary artists, acquired from exhibitions including its popular Community Art Exhibition started by artist and activist Ann Newmarch in 1982. Adelaide Festival Centre Works of Art Collection was established in 1973 with over-subscribed funds from the public towards the building of Festival Theatre, which were used to acquire significant works that are permanently installed in the grounds.
In the language of fibre and textile arts, works from the Collections, are ‘intertwined’ and ‘woven’ together for this display. At Newmarch Gallery, Prospect, until 15 February, selected works are set among significant weaving, tapestry, knotting and stitching created by well-known artists, community groups and individuals, housed by each Collection.
