Theatre Décor & Design

The Regent, Theatre Royal, Majestic and Queens Theatres were the finest theatres in Adelaide.

Her Majesty’s Theatre curtain tassels (detail), Performing Arts Collection, Adelaide Festival Centre, photograph by Tess Potiki

The Regent, Theatre Royal, Majestic and Queens Theatres were the finest theatres in Adelaide. Vestiges of their gilded nineteenth century and art nouveau décor stylings, architectural features and furniture takes us straight back in time.

Salvaged from these glorious old theatres comes a genuinely diverse and fascinating collection of original curtain and wallpaper samples, tassels, ticket booth, seats, lights, plans and the surprisingly a hundred and three-year-old, three-metre-tall muse from the proscenium arch of the Majestic Theatre. The Collection also maintains a photographic archive of the theatres (past and present) of Adelaide.
